You should be asking yourself a very simple question: Am I comfortable with my financial adviser?
Patience is the key to successful investing. A comfortable working relationship with an adviser helps you learn this necessary patience.
The purpose of saving money and investing it in the stock market should be to better one’s life on all levels. However, when the market becomes volatile, the stress levels of many investors skyrocket!
They panic and sell as those annoying little things we call emotions cause them to lose focus. That lack of focus will ultimately destroy financial opportunities.
If you have an adviser you’re comfortable with, you know they will take the time to answer your questions and educate you at your current level of understanding using only the terminology that you can comprehend. (I’ve prepared a handy glossary, Wall Street Definitions, to help you with this. Just click and you’ll have it immediately at your fingertips!)
Last, but not least, you should feel confident that you and your adviser are on the same side … yours! This is where dealing with a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) makes all the difference. The fees of an RIA are presented completely and fully, up front and in the open.
The limitation of a set and transparent fee gives them “skin in the game” because they won’t make (earn) any more money unless your account rises in value. As an RIA, the growth of your investments is as important to me as it is to you! My investment in your future requires study, research, and continual observation of what the stocks I have chosen for you can provide.
The hardest part for any new client is watching the markets during a downturn. The media touts these drops as though it’s the end of the world.
The reports scare people and where there’s fear, meddling emotions come into play, frightening people into taking actions that ultimately do way more harm than the market drops. My job is to recognize those emotions, talk to you about them, and use my knowledge and experience to calmly keep sanity in the forefront.
Keep in mind: Markets must come down and take a breather every once in a while.
There will always be some influences that will periodically cause this to happen. It may be a scare like Ebola, an overblown political situation, or simply that a few companies did not make the numbers Wall Street wanted to see. Putting these things into perspective is what your RIA is for … and that knowledge should bring a sigh of relief along with a feeling of confidence and security.
Finding a professional with whom you are comfortable and who will help you enjoy your ride towards financial freedom.
