What can you do? You are the investor not the CEO of any public company. Why are you being asked this question?
I am asking about what you think you can do to change the roller coaster ride in the stock market because I want you to stand back and recognize why you invested in the first place. Do you invest because you want your money to work for you?
You want to have money 5, 10, 30 years from now which will allow you to retire comfortably.
But what does “retire” mean for you?
It actually means to transition. What you transition to will be your choice. But know that “retire” does not mean to go home and stop living, so stop watching the markets rise and fall. Have a clear understanding of each product or security you have invested in or the comfort of knowing that your money is with a representative who you believe in and has the philosophical belief which parallels yours.
Then you need to spend your time living your life.
Over the course of my investing career I have watched the following events occur more than I care to remember:
- A person invests without understanding what they are buying, and when the markets become fickle the person sells at a loss.
- A person invests with a professional and when the markets become fickle they decide the professional does not know what they are doing and they sell at a loss.
Both of these people bailed early for the wrong reason(s) —due to fear (false evidence appearing real). Their lack of patience, listening, and desire to learn removed them from the opportunity which could change their lives.
It is during down markets that you will discover your true nature regarding money. Do you understand that when you buy stock you now own a part of the company?
Let’s compare your life to that of a public company.
Your daily life is spent at work, with family, friends, associates, and perhaps exercising, reading, or on social activities. However, as life always does you are presented with challenges which arise and throw you off track. It doesn’t matter where the obstacle arises — it can be in relationships, family matters, health, friendships, or work. You do not give up… but you discover what your options are in dealing with this challenge and you then address the challenge and continue with life.
Public companies are run by people. Their job is to keep the companies’ product or service functioning and progressing. Their lives depend on the company moving forward since the company pays them for the work they do. So the employees have a great desire to address all challenges which are thrown their way.
Companies go public in order to raise money to grow.
They risk a lot to give the general public the opportunity to better their lives through purchasing a piece of the company. That is buying their stock. Remember, when you purchase a stock that you have become an owner of a company.
