A potential investor’s interest in the stock market often starts with watching financial news programs on TV.
If you’re familiar with this wasteland of disinformation, perhaps you’ve noticed that “investing” is a term constantly tossed around among the talking heads.
But what they should really be saying is “trading.” And here’s why…
Trading vs. Investing
The commercials that run during these programs are mostly selling trading platforms, option programs, or charting programs. A word to the wise: these are not tools the average investor — especially the beginning investor — should be inclined to use, as they tend to confuse more than clarify.
Short term trading is not investing! Investing requires putting patience, focus, strategy, and time behind your money.
And that’s because opportunity cost (an industry term that means “missing out on the appropriate investments because of short-term fears”) can be one of the greatest risks to your portfolio.
Volatility risk is a key component of the stock market. It allows the faint-of-heart to realize and admit they are unsure of their position and may not want to (or should not) stay in the stock market.
However, volatility risk also offers the stalwart, true investor great opportunities to pick up additional shares of companies of interest that they may have been watching for some time.
Investing is no different from other aspects of life.
Like a roller coaster, it goes up, down, twists and turns — curving sharply one way then another — most times unexpectedly. Enjoying the ride is what separates the winners in all of life’s adventures from those who only want to be at the top without earning the privilege of being there.
