Why does everyone overthink when it comes to investing? For example… “what if the stock market crashes, what if a tornado, hurricane, or flood hits your home?”
Will the value of your stocks come down, yes, but they will also go back up if given enough time. And the more you invest when stocks are down the faster your money will begin to grow when the market goes back up.
How to invest in a down market
Here’s an example. Let’s say a natural disaster hits your home. You will have lost a lot of material items, surely, but you will pick yourself up and rebuild. You don’t condemn the property and walk away.
Now, I hear you saying, “But that is different than losing my money.” Well, how is that different? Money is money. Did you plan to have a natural disaster hit your home? No. But when it did you understood you needed to pick yourself up and move forward.
The same with the stock market.
When it goes down is when you need to buy more. The catch with the stock market, however, is WHAT you are buying. Because not all stocks are the same. And when people buy stocks that they don’t understand that can be a big part of the problem.
And not working with a professional and “doing it on their own” can be another part of the problem.
Let’s say you think you know how to invest and you pick out 5 stocks, just because you think they will do well. How much time are you going to give to reading? Yes, reading. You need to stay on top of their earnings, of the news they put out, what is moving the company or causing the company’s earnings to fall back.
Here is my point… if you want to have a chance of truly making money in the stock market then use a professional that you can communicate with, that is working for your benefit and not their own pocket book.
As an RIA Registered Investment Advisor who owns her own company and only buys individual stocks I am “all in” when it comes to the world of stock investing. I have a passion which drives me to read, research, and observe the world around me continually looking for the next opportunity.
