The Truth About Mutual Fund Performance

November 1, 2016

Business team analyzing market research results togetherA case study…

Are you aware that mutual funds under-perform individual stock investing?

A client recently shared how he had recently attended an investment seminar with a friend and when they left the friend was ready to invest with the broker in mutual funds.

He then told me how he took his friend for coffee and began asking him all sorts of questions, such as:

  • What is the cost to buy the mutual fund?
  • What other costs will you incur?
  • What if the market goes crazy, how fast can you get out?
  • How many stocks are in the fund you want?
  • What if you do not want to own a certain industry in the fund?
  • How often can you speak with the portfolio manager?

I smiled and said, “Wow, it sounds like you were really drilling your friend?”

“Yep,” he said, “and you know why? Because I had invested in mutual funds and other products for years until I was introduced to you and you showed me how I could truly make money.”

He continued to talk about his own experiences and other issues which came up at the seminar.

He said, “Vicki, you have told me before that when you go to an investment seminar the point is not to educate anyone. Rather, it’s to drive business towards the speakers and their products. I was finally able to hear and understand what you have been saying for years. That the stock market rewards those with the patience, desire, and willingness to stay focused and not to allow the everyday gyrations to scare them. When I looked around at the people and how the speakers were getting them so excited, they practically had them running on stage to hire them. My mind flashed on the statement you made years ago.”

“Which statement?” I asked.

“I remember you teaching me how you lose control of your money when you buy products, you cannot talk to the fund manager, and there are many fees. You allowed me to understand that all the time I had products I was assuming someone was working in my favor but the returns I had received had shown me that was not the truth.”

Before our meeting ended my client said, “I want you to know my ears have been opened and not only will this friend be coming to you soon, but after he saw my portfolio we both plan to educate our friends and coworkers to how they can make their money work by working with you.”

I was humbled and happy to know that one more client was happy with the service I work to provide and the returns he had been receiving.
